“Girl’s Day” is a new holiday in China that was first celebrated in the 1990s. Initiated by Shandong University, the holiday is dedicated to the recognition and praise of single women in China.

Activities during Girl’s Day vary according to regions and universities, but they all serve one goal: to make young, single women feel confident.

March eighth is when “Woman’s Day” is observed in China and all women over the age of eighteen will be sure to celebrate. In spite of the positive and unifying message of this new holiday, some young, single women are reluctant to be labeled as a “woman” – a term that refers to married women with children in China. As a result, the day before “Woman’s Day” is a celebration for these young single women because they’re one step away from adulthood.

The significance and impact of women in academic circles has grown enormously since Chairman Mao’s efforts in 1949 to raise the social status of women in China to equal that of their male counterparts for the first time in Chinese history.

The respect women receive in modern China comes in the wake of years of fighting to earn equal rights and treatment. Nowadays, the only way for a girl to enhance her status in China is through education and as a result female students in China tend to be more driven and perform at a higher level than their male counterparts. “Girl’s Day” serves as a reward for all the hard work that girls have done and for all they add to Chinese society.

At each university which celebrates “Girl’s Day” the celebration is a little different. In one classroom with only one female student all of the men in the class pooled their money and gave their female peer an iPhone to show their appreciation for their female classmate. Meanwhile, some boys at Sichuan University told media that they will use their bike to take their female classmates to and from class on Girl’s Day.

For many, Girl’s Day has developed into a third Valentine’s Day celebration in China – an opportunity for men in China to express a different form of love for the women in their life. Some choose to confess their romantic feelings on this day too.
